Paddling Lake Superior

Big, bad Lake Superior was very calm last night when I took an evening paddle out in Grand Marais Harbor in the central Upper Peninula.
The water was nearly like glass, just a few ripples on occasion. It's was a Tuesday, so there aren't a lot of people around, but I did see one other kayaker.
Evening kayaking is great this time of year and in this place, where the sun sets somewhere between 9:30-10 p.m. It's hard to say exactly when because of the after glow.
I'm up here for a week of paddling, research for a paddling guide to Michigan to be published next spring by The Countryman Press.
Today, Wednesday, is overcast, and there may be some rain. It's hard getting good weather forecasts up here, as the TV networks seem to forget about this place.
My destination today are the Pictured Rocks, sheer cliffs that got from 50 to 200 feet above lake levels. It makes for some tense paddling, but the sights are worth it. Hope the weather holds and the lake doesn't kick up.
